Inter have gone for the wrong short term striker

How good must John Carew’s agent be? Despite being released by West Ham United, the burly striker appears all but set to sign a short term deal with Inter Milan. It’s been well documented that the Nerazzurri need another frontman following the season ending injury to Diego Milito, but this is a player who has netted just 155 times in 444 games – a rate of a goal every 2.8 games.

Granted, Inter need a short term incomer between now and May. The burden placed upon Antonio Cassano and Rodrigo Palacio – two players who aren’t familiar with the number 9 role as much as Milito – was always going to be a heavy one to should.

It’s proven to be just that and while three of the last seven scored by the Milan outfit have been courtesy of the aforementioned duo, they’re still not the players to replicate the threat of their 33-year-old teammate.

Then again, neither is Carew. Without beating around the bush, the former Aston Villa man isn’t good enough for a team of Inter’s stature. No matter how you put it, the club are too good for him. While the Serie A side had been linked with a move for Ruud van Nistelrooy, instead they plumped for a striker who is about as prolific in front of goal as Jamie Carragher.

Credit where it’s due to his agent, who must also represent Julien Faubert and Emeli Sande.
