Kevin Strootman Linked With Manchester United – Why The Red Devils May Struggle To Sign The Midfielder

Many of the Netherlands’ World Cup squad have been linked with Manchester United since Louis van Gaal was named as the Red Devils’ new manager.  One Dutchman who was not in Brazil, however, has also been talked up as a potential target for the club.  Kevin Strootman missed the tournament through injury, but his displays for his country in qualifying and in Serie A for Roma were impressive enough to make him a viable option.

Formerly of PSV, Strootman left his homeland for Italy last year after Roma paid around £15 million for the midfielder’s services.  At 24 years of age, he is in the process of establishing himself as part of the Netherlands’ bright new generation.  Being forced to miss the World Cup will possibly have hurt the player more than the injury that caused him to do so, but having time on his side to shine in future tournaments may act as some consolation.

Roma got off to an exceptional start in Serie A last season, ultimately finishing the campaign in second place.  Strootman’s performances in the middle of the park were one of the main reasons for this, making him a player the club would not wish to lose.  According to Sky Sports, Roma manager Rudi Garcia has confirmed this reluctance by suggesting that any bids for the Netherlands international would be unwelcome.

With Strootman deemed a key part of the Italian side’s future, United may need to cough up big money to have any chance of signing him.  Figures of over £30 millon are reportedly being discussed regarding his price, and it will be interesting to see exactly how much United want the midfielder and how much his current club want to keep hold of him.
